Morehead State University, or MSU for short, is a public, co-educational university located in Morehead, which is the county seat of Rowan County, situated in the US state of Kentucky, with a population of nearly 6000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2000 census, occupying a land area of 9.3 square miles, according to the US Census Bureau. The city was named after Gov. James T. Morehead, and it was the focal point of the Rowan County War.
Morehead State University was founded in 1887, being then known as Morehead Normal School, a church-supported teacher-training school. The state took over the institution in 1922, and 4 years later, the school war renamed as Morehead State Normal School and Teachers College. It was renamed several times since then, again, being known as Morehead State Teachers College in 1930, Morehead State College in 1948, finally adopting its current name in 1968.
The university offers its students nearly 80 degree programs, on the 2-year, 4-year and graduate levels, offered through the following colleges: Caudill College of Humanities, College of Education, College of Business and Public Affairs, and College of Science and Technology, also offering a Bachelor's of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. Its campus was ranked among the safest in the nation, and according to the US News & World Report, MSU is one of the top 25 public universities in the South, MSU also becoming one of only four universities in the U.S. to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in space science.
The athletic teams from MSU are known as the Morehead State Eagles, who compete in 18 varsity sports in NCAA’s Division I Ohio Valley Conference, except football, in which they compete in the Pioneer Football League of the Football Championship Subdivision, being perhaps best known for their basketball team, who won the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, automatically winning a place in the NCAA Tournament, for the 1st time since 1984. The cheerleading squad has also won 20 national championships, the baseball team also contributing in MSU’s fame, winning 7 Ohio Valley Conference Titles, along with the women’s volleyball team, who won the conference 5 times.
The list of notable MSU alumni contains resonant names such as Nelson Allen - former Kentucky state Senator, Rocky Adkins - Kentucky Representative (D-District 99) and House Majority Floor Leader, Phil Simms - Quarterback for the New York Giants, MVP of Super Bowl XXI and a 15-year NFL veteran, football analyst for the CBS television network, James A. Turner, CCP - Executive Director, Verizon Communications, Inc. and Board Member of Whitman-Walker Clinic in Washington, DC, as well as several other people, who have made themselves notable, in various fields, after graduation.
